Cinnamon is another much revered spice used both in cooking and in medicine. It is of the Lauraceae family and of the genus Cinnamomum.

This spice had been traded for thousands of years and many writers acknowledged that the best cinnamon is indeed from the Nusantara. Cinnamon was subsequently brought to Ceylon and planted there in the 17th century.

It was told that a long time ago the Chinese were the people responsible to bring cinnamon to the attention of the west. They brought cinnamon by the silk route and by sea from the Malay Archipelago across the Indian Ocean to the coasts of Ethiopia or then known as Abbysinia. The Arabs, the Persians and the Turks prefered the ones brought to them via Abbysinia as they are of a much superior quality. The Chinses cassia or Chinese cinnamon is definitely of an inferior quality.

Because of the high profit margins they made from trading in the cinnamon they have resorted to adulterating their cargo with the more inferior wild cinnamon. Garcia da Orta mentioned how the sailors would go into the rainforest of the islands in search of the inferior wild cinnamon, stripped them of their bark, dried them on the decks of their ships to adulterate the quality cinnamon they bought.

In our collection we have the much revered Cinnamon of Java, the Chinese cinnamon and the wild cinnamon they used to adulterate good quality cinnamons they trade. You have to smell it to notice  the quality of these cinnamon.
