Gingers are a family of
aromatic plants with subterranean stems called rhizomes. They are
classified under the order of ZIngiberales and the family of
Zingiberaceae.
A lot of the gingers are being used in traditional Malay medicine and
the most frequent ones include halia, halia bara, kunyit and temu
lawak. These are the gingers also used in cooking.
The use of gingers as medicine dates back to a few thousand years or as
old as the Indian and Chinese Traditional Medicine. It is the Chinese
and Indians who introduced ginger to the Arabs and subsequently to the
Europeans.
